The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) spokesperson, Jennifer Kalule Musamba, has confirmed a smooth start to the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) across the country.
While addressing journalists today at the Police Headquarters in Kampala, Musamba revealed that over 800,000 candidates have been registered for the examinations, which are taking place at more than 16,000 UNEB centers nationwide.
“The board wishes to thank the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) leadership for calling off the industrial action, which has eased the board’s work during this examination period. Examinations for PLE candidates have started well,” she said.
Musamba added that 3,644 learners with special needs are sitting for the exams, while 61 candidates are writing their papers from Luzira Prison, including seven females. She further reminded journalists that they are not allowed to cover the examination process but may take photos of candidates lining up for security checks.
UNEB also reiterated its warning against examination malpractice, emphasizing that offenders risk fines ranging between UGX 20 million and 40 million, or imprisonment of five to ten years, or both. The board cautioned that UNEB scouts and officials found involved in malpractice will also be held accountable.
Musamba noted that PLE will conclude tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Uganda Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke, cautioned presidential candidates against holding rallies near examination centers, saying such activities disrupt learners.
Rusoke also provided an update on the ongoing investigations into the recent incident in Kasese, noting that the police have not yet released official statistics.
“The issue in the Rwenzori Region is still under investigation. We call upon the public to remain calm and to share any information that may assist the police in the ongoing inquiries,” Rusoke said.
