As Uganda draws closer to the 2026 general elections, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, has called upon youth from the greater Kigezi region to be agents of peace and resist manipulation by individuals with ill intentions.

Justice Byabakama made the remarks while addressing youth from Rukungiri and surrounding districts during a dialogue held at Statistics House in Kampala under the theme, “The Role of the Youth in Ensuring Peaceful Elections.”

The event was attended by former Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and former Kabale University Chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera.

“We cannot allow prophets of doom to mislead us. As young people, ask yourselves what is required of you to ensure peaceful elections. Think about where your country has come from. Every generation faces challenges, and as young people, you must find solutions,” said Justice Byabakama.

He emphasized that the law clearly outlines the role of youth in promoting peace and warned against engaging in acts of violence that could drive away investors and worsen unemployment.

“The youth should not allow to be used. Those in authority should not view young people as trouble causers,” he added.

Responding to questions from participants, Justice Byabakama urged youth to channel their anger and energy into constructive dialogue through established avenues.
“It is not true that young people have no opportunities to serve. In my view, Uganda is among the most democratic countries, with structures that allow every group including the youth to be represented. The question is whether those elected have truly benefited young people,” he said.

He further noted that “no election is perfectly free and fair,” and called for unity in the fight against corruption.

In his keynote address, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera thanked the organizers—the International Community of Banyakitara, Uganda Chapter for hosting the event and urged youth to broaden their knowledge and understanding of global issues.

“The leadership of this country must meet the expectations of the people. Money has become the language our people understand, and we must reflect on whether leaders seek office to serve or to work for personal gain. Are elections the best way of choosing leaders? Why not sit and select them? Young people, don’t be obsessed with elective positions. On January 15th, 2026 vote wisely,” he said.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Rugunda launched the organization’s strategic plan during the meeting.

Meanwhile, William Katumba, a leader in the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF), cautioned youth against participating in violence for monetary gain.
“I know many young people are enticed with money by some politicians to engage in violence, but you must think about where our country has come from and where it is heading. Exercise your rights within the law,” Katumba said.
