Officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have highly praised the city cleaners, saying they are doing commendable work to protect public health and maintain cleanliness in Kampala.
KCCA’s Executive Director, Hajjat Sharifa Buzeki, made the remarks during the launch of competitions for city cleaners held in Bwaise, Kawempe Division. The competitions will involve all the Kampala divisions, including Kawempe, Lubaga, Nakawa, Kampala Central, and Makindye. The competition will determine which division performs its duties most effectively.
Hajjat Sharifa Buzeki used the occasion to urge the public to maintain proper hygiene by avoiding littering in drainage channels and dumping rubbish anywhere, noting that such habits make the work of cleaners difficult.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Kawempe Division, Dr. Emmanuel Sserunjogi Owe’ddembe, encouraged residents of Kawempe to maintain cleanliness and appreciated those involved in sanitation efforts, saying their work has significantly reduced diseases caused by poor hygiene, which previously affected many people in Kampala.
Similarly, the Kawempe Town Clerk, Godfrey Rwakabale, encouraged Kampala residents to embrace tree planting, noting that trees are important for public health and also help in maintaining a clean environment.
However, the city cleaners called on KCCA to review their salaries and expressed concerns about the challenges they face, including being knocked by vehicles and interference from politicians who disrupt their work.
