As schools officially kick off Term One after a prolonged holiday, the Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo, has called upon parents and guardians to ensure that all learners report to school without delay.

The appeal comes after the Ministry of Education and Sports revised the opening date for schools from 2nd February to 10th February 2026. Many parents had welcomed the extension, saying it gave them sufficient time to prepare their children for the new academic year.

Speaking at the start of the term, Muyingo thanked parents for their care during the holiday but stressed that learning must begin immediately.

“I thank parents and guardians for the care and protection given to our children during the holiday period. As the new school term begins today, I make a special appeal to all parents to ensure that their children return to school promptly. The perception that there is no serious work at the beginning of term is incorrect and should no longer keep learners at home,” he said.

The minister also urged teachers and school administrators to be fully prepared to receive learners, ensuring that essential services such as meals and learner welfare are in place.

He further directed education inspectors and officers to monitor schools closely to guarantee safe and conducive learning environments for all students.

“Regular attendance from the first day of term is essential for discipline, continuity, and academic progress. I therefore appeal to all parents to support their children’s education by returning them to school today,” Muyingo added.

Meanwhile, the placement exercise for Senior One learners is scheduled to take place this week on 12th and 13th February 2026 at UMA Multipurpose Hall in Kampala. Heads of schools have been encouraged to attend the exercise.

Senior One learners who will be placed during this exercise are expected to officially begin their term on 2nd March 2026.
