Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President General Jimmy Akena has accused the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) of interfering in past elections, saying such involvement is illegal under Ugandan law.
Addressing journalists at the UPC headquarters in Kampala, Akena particularly pointed to what he described as military influence in elections in Lira, arguing that the outcomes reflected decisions of the army rather than the will of the people.
He rejected claims that former President Milton Obote rigged elections in the past, insisting that Obote’s name should now be cleared. Akena also took a swipe at the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, urging him to act more responsibly given his position and his status as the President’s son.
“Being a son of the President, you must mind what you post or say. Muhoozi, please grow up. The responsibility you want to take over requires mature behaviour,” Akena said, adding that he would not remain silent on matters affecting the country.
On internal party matters, Akena acknowledged that he was previously blocked by the Electoral Commission from contesting as UPC’s presidential flag bearer due to disputes within the party over his leadership legitimacy. Despite this, he said he remains committed to building a united and democratic Uganda.
Akena called on Ugandans to actively defend democracy, warning that without it, the country risks collapse. He urged citizens to join UPC in this struggle, saying many people fear speaking out but that he remains ready to stand up for the nation.
He also reaffirmed UPC’s commitment to working through the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD), noting that the platform is meant for all parties with representation in Parliament and that UPC will continue advocating for citizens’ interests.
