In an effort to appreciate female Muslim street cleaners, MTN MoMo, in partnership with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has donated hampers to selected cleaners in Kampala.

The event was held at City Hall and attended by the Lord Mayor of Kampala, Erias Lukwago, KCCA Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki, Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi, among other officials.

A total of 100 cleaners who received the hampers expressed gratitude to KCCA and MTN MoMo for recognizing their efforts. They said the gesture meant a lot to them, noting that KCCA has many categories of workers and being selected among them was something they greatly appreciated.

In her remarks, Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki thanked the cleaners for their dedication and also appreciated MTN MoMo for partnering with KCCA to support them.

“I want to thank MTN MoMo for this partnership. Today we are here to give back to those we consider among the most deserving workers who clean our roads every day. In Islam, giving is highly rewarding, and we believe God will bless MTN MoMo for this generous act,” she said.

Buzeki explained that after KCCA reached out to the company, MTN MoMo agreed to provide 100 hampers for the cleaners. She added that Kibuli Muslim Hospital also contributed 10 hampers which will be given to security personnel.

“We selected 100 beneficiaries from more than 4,000 road cleaners, and we hope such initiatives will continue in the future, possibly with more partners coming on board,” she added.

In his address, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago also thanked MTN MoMo for supporting the city’s frontline workers.

“Thank you for appreciating our frontline workers. This gesture shows that more support could come their way. For us, this is already a celebration of International Women’s Day,” Lukwago said.

He also expressed concern over the welfare of the street cleaners, noting that many earn only about 6,000 Uganda shillings per day.

“I feel bad that you receive only 6,000 shillings. We have asked the council to consider increasing support for workers in the upcoming budget,” he said, adding that the city budget had been reduced from about 900 billion shillings to around 700 billion shillings.

Meanwhile, MTN MoMo representative Mr. Ocen commended the strong partnership between the company and KCCA.

“It is an honor for us as MTN MoMo to partner with KCCA. As part of our Ramadan activities, we are extending practical support to the women who clean our roads every day. These women are mothers who play a vital role in keeping our city clean,” he said.

Ocen also revealed that MTN would further support KCCA road workers by providing protective gear in addition to the hampers donated during the event.
