Hundreds of journalists gathered at All Saints’ Cathedral Nakasero to thank God for guiding them through the election period.
The thanksgiving service brought together journalists from various media houses who said the gathering was meant to appreciate God’s protection and guidance during the often demanding work of covering elections.
During his sermon, Jackson Frederick Baalwa, Bishop of the Church of Uganda Diocese of Kampala, urged journalists to remain faithful and committed to their professional responsibilities. He based his message on a passage from the Book of Deuteronomy 28:1–14, which emphasizes obedience to God and the blessings that follow.
Quoting the scripture, he reminded the congregation that those who obey the Lord will be blessed in the city and in the country, and that God’s favor follows those who faithfully follow His commands.
Journalists also used the opportunity to testify about the goodness of God in their lives.
Miracle Ibra of Top Television said he went through a difficult moment while covering the Kawempe North election campaigns.
“I am here to thank God for giving me another chance to serve. I went through a very terrible situation during the Kawempe North election but God was there for me. If it was not by God’s grace, I would not be here,” he said.
The spokesperson of the Electoral Commission of Uganda, Julius Mucunguzi, who joined journalists for the thanksgiving, thanked the organizers for the initiative.
“I want to thank the organizers led by Robinah Nantale of Bukedde for this work. This initiative is good because we need God in whatever we do. We once again thank you journalists for helping us organize free and fair elections. Without you, it would be very hard for us to fulfill our duties,” he said.
Mucunguzi also reminded journalists about the importance of truth in their profession.
“Truth is what defines us as journalists and it is very crucial. I know there are many challenges that you face during your work, but we should continue doing our work diligently,” he added.
The leader of journalists in Parliament, Sam Ibanda Mugabi, also urged journalists to remain focused despite the challenges they face while executing their duties.
It should be noted that this was the third thanksgiving service organized by journalists.
The chief guest, Ndase Faizo from State House Uganda, said he was grateful that journalists had taken time to recognize God’s role in their work. He also encouraged journalists to embrace the money economy by joining various government programs aimed at improving their livelihoods.
