Africa Tourism and Environment Initiatives (ATEI), in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment, has successfully organized the Miss Climate Change Awareness Uganda 2026/27 pageant, culminating in the crowning of Kirabo Patience Joyce as the national climate ambassador.
The event, held as part of the pre-activities leading to Uganda Water and Environment Week 2026, highlighted the growing role of youth-led initiatives in promoting environmental sustainability in Uganda.
Kirabo emerged winner after impressing judges with her strong understanding of climate challenges, confidence, and practical solutions. She will spearhead climate action initiatives across the country during her tenure. She was followed by Akiro Martha from the Northern Region as the 1st Runner-Up, and Mirembe Winnie from the Central Region as the 2nd Runner-Up.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alfred Okot Okidi reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting youth-driven climate initiatives. He pledged continued collaboration with ATEI and emphasized the need to operationalize the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and the organization. He added that the Ministry will work closely with the newly crowned Queen to advance environmental goals.
Dr. Okidi further announced that the winners will be supported to represent Uganda at national and international platforms, including the Conference of the Parties, in a move aimed at amplifying youth voices in global climate discussions.
The 2026/27 edition marks a major milestone for the initiative, having grown into a fully national competition with structured regional participation across Eastern, Southwestern, Albertine, Central, and Northern Uganda. The competition attracted young women committed to climate advocacy, innovation, and community engagement.
ATEI Team Lead, Bismac Amumpaire Moses, described the initiative as a growing movement shaping a new generation of climate leaders, with plans to expand inclusivity in future editions.
Through this partnership, ATEI and the Ministry aim to empower young people, particularly women, with the knowledge and platforms to drive climate action through tree planting, water conservation, environmental education, and community resilience programs.
