The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has concluded the nomination exercise for party members aspiring to represent Uganda in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The exercise, held in Kampala, followed the elevation of two EALA representatives to Uganda’s 12th Parliament, creating vacancies that must now be filled in accordance with the law.

Dr. Odoi revealed that a total of 39 party members expressed interest, of whom 37 were successfully nominated.

“I thank God that we have received 39 aspirants and nominated 37. As the Commission, we have fulfilled our mandate and will forward the names to the Secretary General for the next stage. We only need two candidates—one from Western and one from Central Uganda,” he said.

He explained that the vacancies arose after former EALA members joined Parliament, which automatically disqualifies them from holding seats in the regional assembly. He added that the decision to proceed with nominations was guided by legal advice after receiving communication from the Clerk to Parliament, following a request from the EALA Secretariat.

Dr. Odoi also addressed a complaint from one of the incumbents who had attempted to halt the process, insisting that the Commission acted within the law.

Several aspirants expressed optimism about the next stage of the process, emphasizing their commitment to promoting regional integration and community values.

One of the aspirants, Juma Uweitunzi , said his nomination marked a significant milestone.

“I thank God for being duly nominated. I have waited for this opportunity for a long time. I am hopeful Members of Parliament will support me. I bring new energy and I am ready to contribute to the community and support President Museveni in fulfilling his commitments,” he noted.
