The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has today released the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Census Monograph 2024 Volume 5 at its headquarters in Kampala.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Chris Mukiza, Executive Director of UBOS, said the report is derived from the National Population and Housing Census NPHC 2024 Main Report. He explained that the MPI monograph is part of a broader series of thematic publications based on detailed analysis of the 2024 Census data.
These publications include the Population Projections Report 2025 to 2050 Volume 1, Sub Regional Profiles Volume 2, Disability Monograph Volume 3, and the Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children Monograph Volume 4.
The event was attended by Members of Parliament from the Planning and Finance Committee, who urged government to continue supporting UBOS in its work. Also present was the UN Country Coordinator, among other stakeholders.
Officiating as chief guest, Amos Lugoloobi, Minister of State for Planning and Economic Development, emphasized the importance of the census in national development.
He welcomed the release of the report, noting that it will guide government planning and policy formulation aimed at reducing poverty levels.
The minister commended UBOS for its continued efforts, highlighting that government has over the years invested heavily in poverty reduction initiatives, which is reflected in the declining levels recorded in recent census findings.
However, he acknowledged that unemployment remains a major challenge and called for collective efforts to address it. He urged development partners to continue supporting Uganda in achieving its goal of eliminating poverty.
He stressed that reliable statistics are essential for effective planning and called on all stakeholders to use the findings to support government programmes.
The minister concluded by expressing optimism that, through joint efforts, Uganda can achieve sustainable development and build the future it aspires to.
