The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has met with musicians and explained the provisions of the newly approved Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Bill, recently passed by Parliament and now awaiting the President’s assent to become law.
Mao hosted the musicians at his home in Lubowa, Wakiso District, where he commended them for their important work in society, especially in entertaining and uplifting people. He emphasized that musicians should benefit from their work, as it contributes significantly to the country.
He added that music is widely used in advertisements for companies such as factories, telecom firms, and pharmaceutical businesses. Therefore, artists should receive a share of revenue from the commercial use of their music. Mao assured musicians that he fully supports their efforts.
He also explained how musicians can earn from their creative works without restricting media houses from broadcasting their content, which helps promote their music to a wider audience.
Meanwhile, the President of the musicians’ association in the country, Eddy Kenzo (real name Edrisa Musuuza), thanked Norbert Mao for clearly explaining the bill and guiding them. He noted that musicians have now reached an important milestone, as they are beginning to see real benefits from their talent and hard work.
