Kitante Primary School in Kampala has today held a swearing-in ceremony for its newly elected prefects as part of efforts to promote leadership among learners.

Speaking at the event, the headteacher, Ms. Kyakuwa Jane Mugisha, congratulated the pupils for exercising their right to vote and choose their leaders. She noted that the school will continue to guide the newly elected prefects and also appreciated those whose tenure has come to an end.

Ms. Mugisha revealed that the school has a population of about 3,600 learners and emphasized the importance of leadership and responsibility among pupils. Kairu Travis was declared the new head boy, while Abaho Grace was named the head girl.

She added that more than 400 pupils expressed interest in leadership positions, prompting staff to carefully select those who qualified.

“We are so proud of you, our newly elected leaders, and we want you to know that you are important to us. To those who did not succeed, do not give up but try again in 2027. Leadership comes with a lot of responsibilities. With the help and guidance of teachers, you will overcome. I urge all pupils to respect their prefects and support them in fulfilling their duties. Leadership means serving others, being exemplary, listening to others, and encouraging cleanliness. Let us work together,” she said.

The chief guest, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, thanked the school administration for inviting him to the event. He encouraged learners to work hard and believe in their potential.

“We have strong faith that you are the future, and your prefects are the ones leading you to that future. Elections in Uganda are guided by the Constitution, which gives citizens the right to choose their leaders. Now that you have elected your leaders, respect them, listen to them, and work together. To the prefects, lead by example,” he said.
