The Banyarwanda community, under their umbrella body UMUBANO, has vowed to vote against President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the 2026 general elections if he does not support the amendment of Article 10 to grant them citizenship.

Frederick Mukasa Mbidde, the national legal adviser of UMUBANO, has expressed disappointment with President Museveni’s executive order, stating that it still falls short of granting citizenship to Banyarwanda born in Uganda. Despite the order’s intention to address longstanding concerns regarding passport applications and citizenship verification, Mbidde argues that it does not go far enough in providing a clear path to citizenship for the Banyarwanda community.

Meanwhile, Simon Kayita, the national chairman of UMUBANO, says they have resolved to embark on a national campaign seeking the amendment of Article 10 to grant Rwandans born in Uganda citizenship.
