The National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU) met with the Nations Media Group to discuss strategies for increasing media coverage on issues affecting people with disabilities.
David Nangosi, representing NUDIPU, highlighted critical areas requiring attention. NUDIPU is advocating for increased accessibility in healthcare facilities, including adjustable beds for pregnant women with disabilities and sensitivity training for health practitioners.
“Healthcare facilities lack necessary support for women with disabilities, particularly during labor,” Nangosi said. He also emphasized the need for inclusive reproductive health services.
On climate change, Nangosi urged the media to take up the issue and report on its disproportionate impact on people with disabilities. “We want media to follow up on stories of persons with disabilities affected by climate-related disasters and highlight the need for inclusive disaster risk reduction strategies,” he said.
NUDIPU also sought collaboration on digital inclusion, including mandatory sign language interpretation in media and accessible digital platforms.
“Media professionals should receive sign language training,” Moses Talemwa from NTV agreed.
NUDIPU requested Nations Media Group to provide free airtime for persons with disabilities to advocate for their rights, allowing them to share their stories and experiences. Nangosi emphasized the importance of utilizing media platforms to amplify the voices of people with disabilities and promote inclusivity.
Talemwa assured NUDIPU of Nations Media Group’s commitment to supporting the disability community.
The meeting was attended by David Nangosi (NUDIPU), Moses Talemwa (NTV), Mbabazi Joan (Assistant Communications Officer, NUDIPU), Doreen Sampa (Uganda Media Women’s Association), Mike Kiberu (KFM Radio), Byamukama Alozious (Uganda Media Women’s Association and Mama FM).
The meeting aimed to spark vital conversations about disability rights and inclusive media representation in Uganda. By amplifying these issues, NUDIPU and the Nations Media Group hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for people with disabilities.
