The Uganda Media Women’s Association (UMWA) has strongly condemned the violation of journalists’ rights by security forces during today’s by-election in Kawempe.
While addressing the media, the Executive Director, Margaret Ssentamu, expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of violence against journalists.
She revealed that several journalists were assaulted while covering the election, an act she described as unacceptable and a direct attack on press freedom.
“As an association, we stand in solidarity with journalists and reaffirm their right to perform their duties without fear of harassment or violence. It is disheartening to see those entrusted with protecting citizens turning against them,” Ssentamu stated.
She criticised the government for failing to protect journalists, urging leaders to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete action to safeguard media practitioners.
According to Ssentamu, it is high time authorities held perpetrators accountable to prevent further violations.
She also urged journalists to prioritise their personal safety while in the field, emphasising that their lives are more valuable than any story. “No assignment is worth your life. Always take precautions to ensure your safety,” she advised.
The association’s strong stance highlights growing concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists in Uganda, especially during politically charged events.
Advocates are now calling for immediate reforms to protect journalists and uphold their rights as they carry out their essential work of informing the public.
