The Uganda Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance has raised concerns over the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases in Uganda, particularly diabetes, hypertension, and heart diseases, which have negatively impacted the country’s economy.
According to Christopher Kwizera, Team Leader at the Uganda Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance, there is a need for combined efforts to combat these diseases in Uganda. He stresses that the media, as a key communication tool, must be more effectively engaged to enhance understanding and reporting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Kwizera adds that the media needs to grasp the concept of NCDs across the country to raise greater awareness of their risk factors and preventive measures. He noted that NCDs continue to rise in Uganda, leading to a negative impact on the country’s economic and social development.
Kwizera further noted that non-communicable diseases are very costly to treat, which is why preventive measures are crucial. These include physical exercise, quitting smoking, limiting excessive alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy diet, among others.
Common non-communicable diseases include diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, cancer, sickle cell disease, and heart diseases, among others.
