In a heartfelt call to action, former Uganda Cranes captain Andrew Mwesigwa has announced a major fundraising campaign for AMESCO High School, the institution he founded using his football earnings. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the school premises in Wakiso.

AMESCO High School, established in 2018, is proof of Mwesigwa’s commitment to education and sports. “Football gave me a platform, but education gave me the tools to build a future,” Mwesigwa stated. The school aims to provide affordable, quality education while fostering athletic talent, particularly among vulnerable children.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted AMESCO High School, disrupting its operations and progress. To counter these challenges, a fundraising ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, 11 August 2024, where President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to be the Guest of Honour, alongside other notable figures from the government and private sectors.

The funds raised will be directed towards two primary goals: enhancing the school’s sports facilities to meet national standards and support comprehensive talent development, and acquiring a bus to ease transportation for students, particularly for sports and academic trips, which have been a significant logistical challenge.

Despite setbacks, AMESCO High School has excelled in sports, winning the Nadangira zonal championships in 2023 and 2024 and competing in national tournaments. Mwesigwa highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing genuine young talent. “Our athletes are true students, balancing education with their sports careers,” he noted.

Mwesigwa emphasised the importance of community support in realising the school’s vision. “We need everyone’s help to build a future where education and sports go hand in hand,” he urged. The fundraising event will feature a testimonial football match between musicians and ex-international players, symbolising unity and support for the cause.

The school’s fundraising efforts are bolstered by the upcoming visit of Mr Michael Nuwagira Kaguta, also known as Chairman Toyota, on 28 July 2024. His visit is expected to draw significant attention and support from the community.

An organising committee has been formed to ensure the success of the fundraising activities, comprising Abbey Mukiibi as Chairperson, Mujib Kasule as Vice Chairperson, Hussein Kato for Finance, Ssekankya Simon as Chief Advisor, Anisha Muhoozi as Executive Committee Member, Ssekamatte Vicent as Coordinator, Lumansi David and Sam Mpozza for Publicity, and Reuben Luyombwe as Coordinator for Ex-Internationals.

Mwesigwa concluded his address by inviting individuals, companies, NGOs, and all well wishers to participate in the fundraising event. “Together, we can ensure that our children have the opportunities they deserve,” he said. The school director expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing support and looked forward to a successful event.

AMESCO High School, situated in Bugwanya village near Kikubampanga stage in Wakiso district along Hoima road, focuses on delivering quality secondary education and nurturing athletic talent. Founded by Andrew Mwesigwa, the school embodies a blend of academic rigour and sports excellence.
