Two graduates from Team University, Akakunda Phioner and Mwebembezi Disckon, hosted a thanksgiving event at St. Peter’s Church in Wandegeya to celebrate their successful completion of a bachelor’s degrees in education despite numerous challenges.

In a heartfelt display of gratitude and appreciation to God, the two graduates from Team University gathered at St. Peter’s Church in Wandegeya for a thanksgiving event that brought together fellow students, faculty, and local residents. Held on a Saturday afternoon, the event was a testament to the students’ gratitude for the mercies they received during their educational journey.

Akakunda Phioner and Mwebembezi Disckon, both siblings, were among the approximately 1600 students who graduated last week from Team University with a bachelor’s degrees in education. Their celebration was a way to thank God for completing their studies despite facing numerous challenges.

Akakunda Phioner expressed that God’s everlasting love was evident in their achievement, as they were among the few who made it to the graduation day.

Mujizi Jason, a brother to the graduates and Head of Laity at St. Peters church, expressed his gratitude for God’s goodness, noting that few people in their home village have had the opportunity to complete their education.

“In our village, only about 10 people have achieved degrees, and four of them are from our family,” Yason said, emphasizing God’s love and provision. “Many young people fail to give thanks because they see their achievements as small, but we should thank God for what we have, considering Psalm 136:1-26, which encourages God’s people to thank Him for His enduring love.”

Jason called on the graduates to provide professional services to Uganda, to desist from corruption, and to serve diligently.

The thanksgiving celebration was diligently organised by the family of the late Reverend Laban Barihize of Bumbaire Igara Bushenyi, who expressed his thanks for the numerous blessings they have experienced, both academically and personally.

In his sermon, Reverend Owamanyire Cris emphasized that God has done great things for His people, but few return to appreciate the giver. “Not many people have had the opportunity to study; therefore, rejoice and thank God for this achievement,” he said. “Remember that education is a privilege, and many long to have this opportunity. We thank God for you, and we celebrate His goodness and love.”

Reverend Owamanyire reminded the congregation of the biblical roots of thanksgiving and the significance of acknowledging the positive aspects of life, even amid challenges. He praised Akakunda and Mwebembezi for their initiative and encouraged them to continue fostering a spirit of gratitude and service. He further advised them to continue further studies to be able to compete in job markets

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the guidance and encouragement, I’ve received from so many people. This thanksgiving is our way of saying thank you and giving back,” Mwebembezi said, her voice filled with emotional joy.
