Leading from the grassroots: The power of women in local government

The discussion examines the importance of women’s participation in local decision-making, the unique strengths women bring to leadership, and the challenges they face, including gender stereotypes, discrimination, criticism and a lack of confidence.

It also highlights key challenges affecting communities in Mukono, including poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and insecurity, and discusses how the government and local leaders are responding to these concerns.

The programme further highlights government initiatives aimed at economically empowering women, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), and explains how women can access and benefit from such programmes. It encourages communities, men, families, schools and local leaders to support women’s participation in leadership and nurture the next generation of female leaders.
