The Uganda Media Women’s Association (UMWA) held a transformative training for journalists and female politicians in Arua District, focusing on public affairs reporting, civic engagement, and public accountability. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between women leaders and the media while addressing challenges that hinder women’s participation in public affairs.
Speaking during the training, Laira Ndagire from UMWA urged journalists to amplify women’s voices in public spaces. “Media team, call the women leaders… have their voices, because we all appreciate that. If they are busy, still try to know the reasons,” she emphasized.
Noel Ayikobua of Pacis FM highlighted societal barriers women face, saying, “This is a patriarchal problem, but society is not static. We need to start making those steps to move forward.”
Onen Joan Prudence of Radio Pacis expressed frustration with stereotypes against women in leadership, recounting, “I am surprised that once a man said on radio that ‘No woman can out-reason a man no matter their level of education.’ As women, we choose men to represent us. Why can’t we support each other?”
Female councilors Draterru Natalia and Logiri Yerusa noted barriers such as expensive media access, misinformation, and bias against women. “Sometimes the media manipulates information and disrespects women’s rights,” they lamented.
UMWA’s initiative seeks to challenge these norms and foster collaboration between journalists and female politicians to create a more inclusive and transparent society.
