Edwin Muhumuza, a journalist with Capital FM and The Highflyer, has praised a recent training on reporting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) for broadening his perspective.
The training, organised by Uganda Media Women’s Association (UMWA) with support from Austrian Development Cooperation, equipped Muhumuza with in-depth knowledge of international, African, and domestic laws related to GBV.
“This training has opened my eyes to report intentionally on GBV, merging laws and policies to influence policymakers,” Muhumuza said. He acknowledged that previously, his reporting lacked this critical perspective.
Muhumuza also acknowledged cultural biases in African reporting, stating, “We come from cultures that discriminate against women.” He committed to shifting his approach, emphasising the importance of understanding GBV from a woman’s perspective and promoting gender equality.
By adopting a more intentional and informed approach, Muhumuza aims to contribute to ending GBV. “This training has filled a gap in my reporting. I’m now better equipped to contribute to ending GBV,” he concluded.
UMWA’s Executive Director Magret Ssentemu welcomed Muhumuza’s commitment, saying, “Empowering journalists to report sensitively and accurately on GBV is crucial for driving change.”
