November 25th marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking action against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). This year’s theme, ‘Invest! End Violence Against Women and Girls,’ emphasises the need for collective investment in preventing and addressing GBV.
According to statistics, one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence.
In Uganda, GBV remains a pervasive issue, with many cases going unreported. To leverage the power of media in amplifying voices in the fight against GBV, SRHR Alliance Uganda organised a media cafe in Kampala. The event brought together journalists, experts, and survivors to discuss the issue and encourage collective action.
“Everyone has a role to play in preventing and addressing GBV,” said Olga Daphine Namuguza, SRHR Country Director. “We must use our voices and platforms to amplify the message of zero tolerance for violence against women and girls.”
Sheirat Namayanja, SRHR Alliance Youth Country Coordinator, shared her personal experience of GBV. “I survived physical and emotional abuse, but many others have not been so fortunate. We must recognise the signs and symptoms of GBV and take action.
Experts agree that GBV is not only a women’s issue but a human rights issue that demands collective action.
The media cafe emphasised the importance of increased public awareness and investment in preventing and addressing GBV.
As the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, SRHR Alliance Uganda calls on individuals, organisations, and governments to invest in ending GBV.
Together, we can make a difference and create a world where women and girls can live free from violence.
