The National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU) has expressed dissatisfaction with the recently released National Population and Housing Census data on persons with disabilities. During a press conference held yesterday, October 15, 2024, NUDIPU questioned the accuracy of the reported 5.7% national prevalence of disability.
According to NUDIPU, this number is too low. Past reports showed higher disability rates – 12.4% in 2014 and 16.5% in 2017.
NUDIPU argues that disability cases are rising due to road accidents, mental health issues, and newly reported disabilities like albinism and epilepsy.
The organiSation demands that Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) provide further analysis and clarification on the reported figures.
Esther Kyozira, NUDIPU’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasised the need for accurate data to ensure effective support and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Uganda.
NUDIPU’s concerns highlight the importance of reliable data in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
