The countrywide NRM register update exercise has commenced with a remarkable turnout of party members, who diligently verified their membership status in the yellow books within their respective villages and branches.
According to the party’s Deputy Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Namayanja Rose Nsereko, the process proceeded smoothly throughout the first day. She visited various registration points in Kampala and Wakiso districts, personally registering members in some branches.
Namayanja emphasized the importance of member participation in the exercise, underlining that only registered members would be eligible to vote in the structure and primary elections preceding the 2026 general elections.
She disclosed that after the update exercise, “the register will undergo printing and then be presented to the people for scrutiny before returning to the national level.” Namayanja emphasized the party’s commitment to eliminating potential obstacles associated with holding primaries, with mechanisms in place to promptly address any concerns raised by members. She clarified that the party is registering only those physically present to ensure accurate record-keeping in the yellow book throughout the registration exercise.
Expressing satisfaction with the exercise’s smooth progress, Namayanja assured that the party would possess a legitimate, certified register in compliance with the party’s roadmap. She also noted that teams are deployed nationwide to ensure the exercise proceeds seamlessly, with no significant issues reported thus far.
NRM National Treasurer Hon. Amb. Nekesa Barbara Oundo, who also updated her membership in Busia district, emphasized the vital importance of the process. “We will use the same register for our structure elections shortly,” she remarked.
Oundo appealed to members to ensure their details were accurately captured, stressing alignment with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA)’s records.
“I urge everyone to utilize these five days to crosscheck their details in the NRM membership register,” she urged. “Remember, this is not a voter’s register but a register for party faithful aged 16 and above. Let’s approach this as a collective responsibility, with everyone playing a vigilant role.”
The registration exercise will continue until Sunday, March 17, 2024
