The Ministry of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to improving patient safety and healthcare quality, aligning with global efforts to reduce diagnostic errors.
The pledge was made by Hon. Hanifa Kawooya Bangirana, Minister of Health in charge of General Duties, during the World Patient Safety Day celebrations held at Wakiso Health Centre IV in Wakiso District, under the theme “Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety.”
Hon. Bangirana emphasised the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and equal service delivery in achieving better health outcomes.
“Our intention is to ensure economic growth and improve the well-being of all Ugandans,” Hon. Bangirana said. “We must prioritise patient safety and healthcare quality to achieve this goal.”
However, the celebrations also provided an opportunity for Wakiso Health Centre IV to address its pressing challenges. District Health Officer Mukisa Emmanuel Muwonge highlighted the facility’s overwhelming patient volume, which compromises patient safety and forces frequent referrals to Kawempe Hospital.
“Wakiso Health Centre IV is receiving extremely high numbers of patients, putting their safety at risk,” Muwonge said. “We urgently need to upgrade the facility to a general hospital to address congestion and ensure quality care.”
Dr. Lugolobi Mathius, the health centre’s in-charge, echoed Muwonge’s concerns, citing the severe shortage of healthcare providers. “Despite the high demand, we have few health providers, and they’re overworked. They barely have time for their families or personal activities.”
