Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has urged the government to take immediate action to prevent another garbage slide tragedy like the recent Kiteezi landfill incident, which resulted in loss of life and property.

Speaking to the media at City Hall Kampala, Lukwago called for emergency funding to stabilise and flatten the remaining waste piles at Kiteezi, facilitate emergency operations at the Nkumba-Katabi dumpsite—including road grading, water provision, and waste management equipment—construct a concrete embankment and soak pit to prevent pollution, and acquire an alternative temporary dumpsite within 20km of Kampala, among other measures.

He also demanded an investigation and prosecution of KCCA officials responsible for mismanaging the UGX 4.18 billion annual allocation for Kiteezi dumpsite maintenance.

According to Lukwago, their technical team has warned of imminent danger due to visible cracks in the waste piles, emphasising the need for urgent interventions.
