Organisations advocating for organic farming, led by PELUM, have raised concerns about the excessive use of chemical fertilisers on food production, which they claim has contributed to an increase in health-related diseases.
This was revealed by Edward Mukiibi, the head of Slow Food Uganda, during a press conference held at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
He further announced that they will be hosting the National Agroecology Week of Action 2024, scheduled to run from October 21 to October 26, 2024, at Hotel Africana. The events aim to ensure the country has enough food while addressing issues related to food safety and health concerns.
Mukiibi called upon all the public to participate in these events as they will provide a platform for agroecology actors to share experiences and strategies for transforming food systems through scaling up of agroecology in Uganda with the goal of improving public policies.
These events will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including government policymakers, farmers, researchers, private sector actors, and civil society organisations.
Participants will discuss how Uganda can enhance agroecological production and market systems while ensuring that supportive policies and institutional frameworks are put in place.
The event will be streamed live across several online platforms, including PELUM Uganda’s YouTube channel and X(formerly Twitter)
