In response to the rising concern over unsafe abortions, various organisations are coming together to improve access to safe and legal abortion services. According to recent statistics, many individuals are resorting to unsafe and illegal abortion methods, leading to severe health complications and, in some cases, death.
Dr Othoniel Musan, a gynaecologist, highlighted the importance of safe abortion services, noting that while such services provide physical comfort and relief, the stigma and illegality surrounding them often result in significant mental distress.
He explained that the fear of judgement, shame, and legal repercussions forces individuals to hide their experiences, leading to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and stress. This emotional burden can be as damaging as the physical risks posed by unsafe abortions.
Dr Othoniel further emphasised the need to decriminalise abortion, arguing that individuals seeking these services are not criminals but people facing difficult social issues who deserve support and rehabilitation.
Ruth Ajalo, Programme Manager at the Centre for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD), spoke about the importance of involving cultural leaders and champions in addressing teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and the stigma surrounding these sensitive topics.
The event, organised by the Women Probono Network, underscored the role of community strength in promoting safe abortion practices and breaking the cycle of stigma and unsafe procedures.
