Joan Namusabi, a volunteer with Uganda Albinism Umbrella has called for urgent action to make life safer for persons with albinism in Uganda. She shared her own experience of being forced to quit her job due to negative attitudes from colleagues who saw her as vulnerable.
She noted that in villages, many people with albinism cannot even afford the cheapest sunscreen lotion which costs 16,000 UGX (the smallest tin). The Uganda Albinism Umbrella continues to work tirelessly to provide sunscreen to those in need across the country.
Namusabi urged teachers to give extra care to learners with albinism and other disabilities, helping them feel included and motivated despite discrimination at school. She also reminded the public that albinism is not contagious and strongly condemned harmful myths such as the belief that sexual intercourse with persons with albinism can cure HIV.

Speaking during the radio talk show program “Obulema Ssi Butebola”a luganda phrase meaning “Disability is not Inability” at MamaFm, she encouraged fellow persons with albinism to actively engage in development projects to fight poverty and advised against requesting transport refunds when invited to training workshops that benefit the community.
