The Electoral Commission (EC) yesterday held the second day of its harmonisation programme with representatives of the eight successful presidential aspirants from different political parties. The session, held at the Commission headquarters in Kampala, aimed to ensure candidates do not clash during the campaign period, officially set for 29 September 2025 to 12 January 2026.
The participating parties included:
All representatives agreed to abide by the law and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the presence of EC legal officers and other officials. Each party also received 100 copies of the presidential campaign guidelines.
Dr Kanaabi Moses, representing NUP, stressed that the agreement must be respected by all:
“We have accepted to sign, but our emphasis is to see that this MoU is empowered and respected,” he said.
FDC’s Robert Centenary reminded security officers of their future responsibility, saying:
“I want to remind the security agencies that one of us is going to become your Commander-in-Chief, so you should respect that.”
NRM representative Moses Byaruhanga confirmed that their campaign programme remains unchanged, with the launch set for Luweero District. ANT was represented by Bicwa Roger, CMP by Lukwago Musa, CP by Elisha Simba, and NPP by Bruce Muhangi, who noted that his party has sufficient campaign funding.
Speaking on behalf of the Commission, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi urged all candidates to respect the signed MoU and maintain peace during the campaigns. On the role of security agencies, Mucunguzi clarified that while the Uganda Police Force takes the lead in managing campaigns, the law permits it to seek assistance from sister security agencies when necessary.
According to the agreed schedules, Robert Kyagulanyi (NUP) will launch his campaigns in Jinja District, Robert Kasibante (NPP) will begin in Mityana District, and Mubarak Munyagwa (FDC) will start in Kawempe Division, Kampala, among others.
