The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party yesterday conducted its National Youth Council (NYC) elections at the party’s Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala, with over 400 delegates from across the country participating.
The elections, aimed at giving young people an opportunity to serve in leadership, saw candidates contest for several positions including Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary for Legal Affairs, Secretary for External Affairs, Secretary for Sports and Culture, Secretary for Finance, and Secretary for Student Affairs, among others.
Speaking after the exercise, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi commended the youth for their courage and thanked the party’s top leadership for providing the necessary support that enabled the commission to conduct the polls successfully.
Although voting was initially delayed due to disagreements over allowances—delegates demanding them before voting while the commission insisted they would be given after—the elections were eventually carried out by lining up behind candidates.
Daniel Ongom was elected Chairman of the National Youth Council, while Jonathan Tayebwa won the position of Secretary for Student Affairs. The Secretary for Finance slot went to Godfrey Kamukama, and the Secretary for Sports and Culture was secured by Albert Loret. Other successful candidates included Sheilla Ainembabazi, Sarah Acemo, Edith Ayebare, and Priscilla Mbabazi.
Notably, Timothy Kadaga was among those who failed to make it through, managing only five votes. Dr. Odoi noted that at some point, candidates were given time to reconcile and agree on certain positions, which eased the work of the commission
