The Electoral Commission Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Dr Tanga Odoi, has officially confirmed the conclusion of the nomination exercise, which has been ongoing since last month. The chairperson confirmed that two individuals have collected forms to contest for the position of presidential candidate.
“Two candidates have expressed interest in contesting for the position of presidential flag bearer. I want to thank the media for their coverage since we began this exercise in June,” he said.
Dr Odoi also stated that 100 signatures are required from each district for those wishing to stand as the party’s presidential candidate, and all signatures will be verified by the party’s team of lawyers. While 300 expressed interest in the Central Executive Committee (CEC), only 283 returned nomination forms.
Certain members have been allowed to campaign independently for various reasons; these include Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, General Moses Ali, Rt Hon Speaker Anita Among, and Vice President Jesca Alupo, among others.
Among those nominated today is Nowomugisha Sadrack Nzeire Kaguta, who is standing for the Central Executive Committee. Shadrack has stated that he is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between ordinary members and the CEC, which is the party’s decision-making body.
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has also been nominated. She promised to promote the ideals of the party. “I want to express my gratitude to all the delegates who braved the early morning showers to accompany us during the nomination exercise. I pledge to demonstrate the same level of commitment in promoting the ideals and aspirations of our esteemed party if elected as the Second National Vice Chairperson (Female),” she said.
