Uganda’s national team made history yesterday by qualifying for the quarter-finals of the CHAN 2024 tournament. The Cranes, who have participated in the tournament six times previously, marked their seventh appearance with a breakthrough performance that secured their place in the next round. The decisive match against South Africa, played at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in Kampala, ended in a 3-3 draw, allowing Uganda to progress.
CHAN 2024 is being jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, with all three host nations advancing to the quarter-finals. Following the Cranes’ success, various dignitaries and leaders sent congratulatory messages to the team.
First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, who was present at the stadium, expressed her joy and thanked God for the team’s achievement. Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, also praised the players for ensuring Uganda progressed beyond the group stage.
The Deputy Resident City Commissioner of Kampala Central, Nsubuga Shafik Ali, commended the Cranes for defying expectations. “I want to use this opportunity to thank our players for making history. It has been a remarkable comeback. No one was expecting this because South Africa is ahead of us in the FIFA rankings, but we managed to handle them,” he said.
Meanwhile, away from the celebrations, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has reminded school heads and education officials of the mandatory display of the 2025 candidates’ registers.
According to UNEB spokesperson Jennifer Musumba, the board’s Executive Director, Dan Odong, has directed Heads of Centres, as well as District, City, and Municipal Inspectors of Schools, to display the registers from 10 August to 10 October 2025.
As stipulated in the UNEB Act, Cap 259 S.4(2), the registers must be placed in visible locations to allow easy access by concerned parties. The public has been urged to take note of this important requirement.
