The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has intensified initiatives aimed at improving environmental conservation in Uganda’s capital, as part of its mandate to ensure a cleaner and healthier city.

Over the years, KCCA has launched several campaigns, including Weyonje, which encourages residents to properly sort garbage—for example, keeping polythene bags separate—and to regularly clean trenches within their communities.

Despite these efforts, a visible gap remains between KCCA and city dwellers, which, if not addressed, could undermine the progress made. Among its notable activities is tree planting, an initiative aimed at restoring Kampala’s green cover.

Annet Kanyesigye, a city resident, commended KCCA for its ongoing work to protect the environment. She noted that proper environmental management could reduce health-related expenses arising from pollution-related diseases, such as coughs caused by gas emissions.

“I want to commend KCCA for at least trying to save our environment,” she said. “However, leaders need to do more to sensitise the public about the importance of environmental conservation. These campaigns should also involve young people, since they make up the majority.”

KCCA Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki has frequently participated in cleanup exercises and urged the public to support government programmes that promote a clean and sustainable environment.

As Uganda prepares to celebrate its 63rd Independence Anniversary this Thursday, citizens, particularly those in urban centres, are being encouraged to reflect on their role in protecting the environment and to actively join government efforts to address environmental degradation.
