Victoria University holds online guild elections, Mugarura wins presidency

As part of efforts to promote leadership in higher education institutions, the Electoral Commission of Victoria University conducted a two-day online voting exercise on 17 and 18 February to elect members of the Guild Council for the 2026/27 academic year.

According to a statement issued by the University Electoral Commission Chairperson, Atayo Habib, the exercise was conducted smoothly, and the winners were officially announced by the university leadership.

In the race for Guild President, Mugarura Isaiah Ndebwoha emerged victorious after securing 2,980 votes, representing 55.78 per cent of the 5,866 total votes cast. He was consequently declared the ninth Guild President of the university.

His closest competitor, Munungu Marvin Kahuma, garnered 2,298 votes, accounting for 39.2 per cent of the total, placing him second. Luweru Ben Kazigo finished third with 588 votes, representing 10.0 per cent.

The university leadership congratulated the winner and commended all candidates for participating in a competitive and peaceful election. Students also congratulated the newly elected Guild President and urged him to prioritise students’ welfare and collective interests over personal ambitions.

During his campaign, Mugarura encouraged students to entrust him with leadership, promising to deliver on his manifesto. With the mandate now granted, attention shifts to the implementation of his pledges during his one-year term.
