2025 Women’s Day celebrations: Public’s opinion

As Uganda joins the rest of the World, to commemorate international women’s day, people from various disciplines, have come up to give their views about this historical day which being commemorated this year under the Theme, “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality.” with main celebrations taking place at Bukwiri Church of Uganda Primary School, Butemba Town Council in Kyankwanzi district.

The headteacher of Sheehan Standard day and boarding primary School, in Lubaga division, Kampala district, Kizito Joseph, has thanked the government for giving women space in various positions, to serve their country. “I want to thank this government as we celebrate women’s day, for spearheading women in some of the top positions in the country. Indeed government has done a good job in that regard because we don’t want them to remain behind. As a school we hope to celebrate this day on Monday such that our learners get to understand how important this day is to a woman.” He said.

“Here at Sheehan Standard day and boarding primary School in our staff, women are the majority and also when it comes to parents, the big number of parents who cares much about things concerning education are women. So as a school we congratulate them so much. We also congratulate our wives who do a great work. We appeal to them to continue being hardworking for the betterment of this country.” Kizito emphasized.

In the same manner, the secretary general of Uganda dance sport federation, Barnabas Ssebuyungo, said that as a federation, they make sure that they bring women on board. “In our constitution, it is very clear that all committees be it on district level, where there’s five men, there must be a woman. On the executive committee we have two women out of the eight members. We are celebrating this day at St. Lawrence Horizon campus for female students and a series of activities are taking place including giving advice to these young girls. We encourage all women to join dance sport and also make it a point to engage in leadership.” He said.

In qualifying series of 2024 Paris Olympics, Uganda had the youngest girl among the participants and she put a good performance. “Girls can become trainers, judges, etc. So as a federation we mind so much about women in the sport.” He added. Ms.Nakanjako Rehema, a single mother of four children, in Wakiso district, appeals to government, to ease the requirements for GROW money. She however thanks the president, for trying to make sure that women are part of the money economy.

Meanwhile, government has implemented various programmes to enhance women participation in economic activities including; the constitution of Uganda (1995) which guarantees women’s rights and affirmative action provisions. The Public Finance Management Act (2015) which mandates gender responsive budgeting at national and local government levels. The empowerment Act (2006) and Sexual Harassment Regulations (2012) which safeguard workplace rights and protections for women.
