Veteran journalist and former host of Voice of Africa’s Straight Talk Africa show, Shaka Ssali, passed away last night, just two weeks before his 72nd birthday. In light of this, various dignitaries worldwide have sent comforting messages to the family and media fraternity. Victoria University, among other institutions, has expressed its condolences. Through their X handle, the university acknowledged the pain caused by the loss of Ssali.
“The entire Victoria University community extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Shaka Ssali. We recognise the deep pain that comes with such a loss, and we stand in solidarity with you during this difficult time. Losing a friend is like losing a part of one’s own story, and we pray that you find strength and comfort in the memories you shared. Please accept our sincere sympathies. May you find peace in the legacy your loved one leaves behind and in the lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” Victoria University said in a statement.
Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, Prof. Lawrence Muganga, described the late Shaka Ssali as having a kind and generous spirit. “Africa has lost a towering figure in journalism. His firm dedication to the craft, together with his kindness and generosity, touched countless lives. Shaka’s legacy will live on through the powerful stories he shared, the people he inspired, and the love he spread. I am truly grateful to have had the privilege of knowing him. To the family and friends, I offer my deepest condolences during this extremely difficult time. May all who had the honour of knowing Shaka find comfort in the cherished memories and the lasting impact he made on the world. Rest in peace, Ndugu Shaka Ssali; you will always be missed,” Muganga said.
In the same vein, the Speaker of the 11th Parliament, Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among, has also extended her condolences. “I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dr. Shaka Ssali. Despite spending many years abroad, he remained devoted to his Ugandan and African roots. He shared the African story and inspired the continent. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues in the press. May his remarkable spirit rest in peace and continue to inspire hope across Africa,” she said.
It should be noted that Friday, May 28th, 2021, marked the end of an era for Shaka Ssali at the Voice of America. Ssali was born and raised in Kabale District, Uganda.
