As term two officially begins today in all schools across Uganda, learners have been advised to be cautious about the people they interact with while at school, in order to avoid being sodomised. This follows reports of alleged rampant homosexuality-related activities in schools.

It should be remembered that during one of the recent parliamentary sittings, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, urged the country to combat homosexuality to protect humanity.

“Colleagues, I am hearing painful, grueling stories. When you talk to doctors, you realise how deep this issue is. Many people are suffering in silence. It seems our schools have been completely penetrated. Not only schools—recruitment centres also appear to be very active. It is extremely painful. We are not in charge,” Tayebwa said.

He added, “I spoke to one student who told me he could not walk alone on the school compound. He studies at a prominent boys’ school in this country and said he feared being grabbed and sodomised.”

Tayebwa emphasised that some children, along with their parents, are suffering in silence. During the same parliamentary session, the Woman MP for Tororo district called for a united effort by lawmakers to stop homosexuality in schools.

“Although the NGO Board suspended the activities of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), we now have another group operating under a consortium of NGOs engaged in similar activities. Parliament must take the lead. I urge colleagues not to shy away,” she said.

This followed a report by a parent who sought help after discovering that a teacher at her son’s school had allegedly been sodomising him for four years.

“The teacher has been sodomising my son for four years now. My son has difficulty using the toilet,” the mother said.

Another incident involving a girls-only school also became a hot topic after reports emerged that a few same-sex students were seen walking hand-in-hand during a prom party. With many schools holding prom parties during term two, which has just begun, school administrators have been urged to closely monitor student behavior during such events. It has been alleged that some students use these moments to engage in homosexual activities.

Senteza Hakiram, a teacher and counselor, attributed such behavior to the excessive freedom granted to students.

“I know many people won’t like what I have to say, but this is the truth. Many of these so-called prominent schools in the country give too much freedom to students. When you give minors too much freedom, they can easily be influenced by self-seekers, leading them to practice homosexuality,” he said.

He added that students have the ability to overcome such challenges if they stay focused.

“My advice to learners is this: know that you are studying alongside individuals whose intentions may be to recruit others into homosexuality. Once you understand this, you’ll be more cautious about the friends you keep. Also, take time to pray. Some students forget the power of prayer when they reach school and become vulnerable as a result. Lastly, concentrate on your studies—the future is bright, and you have the potential to become responsible citizens,” he said.
