It is now 100 days since UMEME Limited handed over electricity distribution responsibilities to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). Against this backdrop, officials from UEDCL addressed the nation today at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala to provide an update on the progress made during these 100 days.

UEDCL reported that they have redeployed up to 96% of staff, fully recruiting from the existing UMEME workforce. The remaining 4%, according to UEDCL, were advertised extensively on 16th and 19th June 2025, as there were no suitably matched skills within the internal teams to fill those positions. All staff across 100 offices have now been inducted and aligned with UEDCL’s organisational culture to create a workforce that maximises productivity. This is expected to enhance the achievement of the organisation’s strategic objectives, particularly in driving new connections to meet the targets set by the Electricity Regulatory Authority. A total of 550 staff have been recruited and deployed across the country.

UEDCL also announced plans to recruit over 400 technicians by the end of July 2025. The company operates a fully functional call centre to provide customers with a continuous feedback mechanism, which they encouraged the public to utilise. Alongside their skilled team, UEDCL has maintained both physical and emotional contact with customers throughout the transition period.

UEDCL confirmed that the past three months have been largely reactive, with unplanned outages dominating April and May 2025. However, the company expects the network to stabilise in the short to medium term as planned investments are implemented to provide sustainable relief.

In her speech, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, congratulated UEDCL on reaching the 100-day milestone since taking over the country’s electricity infrastructure. She acknowledged, however, that many people have raised concerns about UEDCL’s service delivery and urged the company to improve its operations.
