The Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi, today addressed the media at the party headquarters in Kampala regarding the forthcoming NRM Delegates’ Conference. The four-day event is scheduled to take place at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds from 25 to 28 August 2025.
Dr Tanga confirmed that the conference will be officially opened by the party chairman and President of Uganda, Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The conference will begin with the elections of special interest groups, which will be conducted through lining up behind candidates, while the elections for workers’ representatives will be conducted by secret ballot.
“This year, unlike previous years when we held the Delegates’ Conference at Namboole Stadium, we shall host the entire exercise at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds,” Dr Tanga said.
He noted that during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held yesterday in Entebbe, Yoweri Museveni was reaffirmed as the NRM National Chairman. He will continue to be deputised by Hajji Moses Kigongo, who retained his position unopposed.
Dr Tanga also addressed recent developments concerning party representatives. He confirmed that Naku Fiona had been dismissed from representing youth interests after a court ruling declared her ineligible due to age, stating that she is over 30 years old and therefore cannot represent youth in Parliament.
He further warned against any attempts to tamper with the integrity of the voting process. “All results will be announced immediately after counting at Kololo. We have received reports that some individuals are hiding delegates. We condemn such acts. If verified, serious action will be taken. Bribery will not be tolerated,” he emphasised.
On internal leadership contests, Dr Tanga said the NEC meeting failed to reach consensus on who should hold the position of Second National Vice Chairperson, Female. The matter has been left for the Delegates’ Conference to decide between former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga and current Speaker Rt Hon Anita Among.
Kadaga, in her address to party members, highlighted her long service and dedication to the NRM, appealing for an opportunity to continue serving. In response, Anita Among acknowledged her relatively recent entry into the party but said she brings fresh ideas and a new perspective to its leadership.
In the race for the Central Executive Committee position representing entrepreneurs, Shukla Mokesh has attracted significant attention. Many entrepreneurs have endorsed him as a strong candidate who can effectively represent the business community. A number of entrepreneurs have urged eligible delegates to vote for Mokesh, citing his experience and commitment to their cause.
The NRM Delegates Conference is expected to set the tone for the party’s direction ahead of the next general elections
