The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Matia Kasaija, has reassured the public that Uganda’s economy is on a steady upward trajectory. Speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre yesterday, the minister said the economy is performing well and remains stable despite global economic pressures.

“I want to tell the country that our economy is moving so well and our debt is not alarming. And our Shilling is doing better against the dollar,” Kasaija said.

He attributed this progress to the leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), noting that since it took power in 1986, Uganda has seen major economic improvements. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, only about 16% of Ugandans currently live in poverty, which Kasaija described as a significant development that citizens should appreciate. He added that the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has risen significantly since 1986 and expressed optimism that continued growth will further boost Uganda’s economic performance.

Meanwhile, the NRM party yesterday continued its internal elections, a process that began on Monday and was officially launched by President Yoweri Museveni, who also serves as the party’s chairman. These elections are aimed at selecting new members to the Central Executive Committee (CEC), the party’s top decision-making organ.

Among the notable winners was Adrine Kobusingye, who garnered the highest number of supporters lining behind her in the women’s league race. She expressed gratitude to her supporters and vowed to advocate for women’s rights within the CEC.

“I am overwhelmed by the love showered to me by my supporters. I thank God for this opportunity to serve and I promise to advocate for women at the Central Executive Committee. I believe that by using this position, I will be able to lobby for the women in the country,” Kobusingye said.
