The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, has reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to advancing the goals and principles of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), emphasizing unity, solidarity, and collective action among member states.
Gen. Odongo made the remarks while officially opening the Senior Officials’ Meeting of the 19th Midterm Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau, held at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Monday.
He noted that nearly two years since Uganda hosted the historic 19th NAM Summit, the country remains steadfast in upholding the Movement’s principled positions and promoting the interests of its members on the global stage.
“As Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau, Uganda remains committed to revitalizing NAM, reinforcing its unity and solidarity, and ensuring that our voice continues to influence international dialogue and decision-making,” Gen. Odongo said.
He urged delegates to engage constructively in negotiations to ensure the effective implementation of NAM’s decisions, particularly in addressing pressing global challenges such as peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, and international cooperation.
The minister highlighted the enduring importance of the Question of Palestine, calling for continued support to end all forms of colonialism, occupation, and oppression in the occupied Palestinian territories. He stressed the need to sustain humanitarian efforts and advance practical steps towards the Two-State Solution.
On economic matters, Gen. Odongo underscored the importance of strengthening South–South cooperation to overcome barriers that limit developing countries’ access to global markets and financing. He pointed to the growing opportunities presented by South–South trade, which has expanded significantly in recent years.
“While South–South trade has grown tremendously, its full potential remains untapped. Strengthening interregional cooperation among Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean will be key to unlocking new avenues for economic growth and mutual benefit,” he said.
The minister concluded by appealing for unity and constructive engagement throughout the meeting, stressing that only through collective action can NAM achieve meaningful results for its member states and future generations.
