The Ministry of Water and Environment, through its Permanent Secretary, Alfred Okot Okidi, has issued a weather update for the remainder of February 2026.

Following the release, farmers who accessed the detailed information expressed their appreciation to the Ministry for the timely guidance. Ojok Andrew, a farmer from Gayaza in Wakiso District, said the update would help him and fellow farmers plan effectively for the rest of February and guide decisions on which crops to plant in March.

During a brief interview with our reporter in Wakiso yesterday, Ojok appealed to the government to continue providing timely weather updates, noting that such information enables farmers to make informed decisions.

Andrew Ojok providing his explanation.

According to the report, February is generally characterised by hot and sunny conditions, marking the end of the December–February dry season. However, the Central Region, particularly areas around the Lake Victoria Basin, and the southwestern parts of the country are currently experiencing heavy showers. Other areas are receiving isolated rainfall.

The findings indicate that the Kigezi sub-region may experience occasional isolated rainfall, while most other parts of the country continue to experience hot and dry conditions.

The current rainfall patterns are being influenced by the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), a weather system characterised by an eastward-moving pulse of clouds and rainfall across the tropics. The MJO is currently strong and in a phase that enhances rainfall over many parts of Uganda. Additionally, a high-pressure system over Southern Africa is affecting local weather conditions.

As a result, the ongoing rainfall is expected to continue and gradually spread to most parts of the country. During this period, moderate isolated rainfall is anticipated in the Elgon region and districts surrounding the Lake Victoria Basin.

Towards the end of February 2026, enhanced rainfall is expected in the Kigezi region and in parts of the Central and Eastern regions, particularly the Elgon areas, while the rest of the country is likely to experience a slight easing of current conditions.

Farmers are therefore advised to use this update to plan and prepare accordingly.
