The Ministry of Water and Environment, through its Permanent Secretary, Alfred Okot Okidi, has released a weather update for the remaining days of February 2026.
Following the release, farmers who accessed the detailed update expressed appreciation to the Ministry for the timely information. Ojok Andrew, a farmer in Gayaza, Wakiso District, said the update will help him and fellow farmers plan effectively for the remaining days of February and guide them on what crops to plant in March.
During a brief interview with our reporter in Wakiso yesterday, Ojok appealed to the government to continue providing timely weather updates, noting that such information helps farmers make informed decisions.
According to the report, February is generally characterized by hot and sunny conditions, marking the end of the December–February dry season. However, the Central Region particularly areas around the Lake Victoria Basin and the southwestern parts of the country are currently experiencing heavy showers. Other parts of the country are receiving isolated outbreaks of rainfall.
The findings indicate that the Kigezi sub-region may experience occasional isolated rainfall, while most other parts of the country continue to experience dry and hot conditions.
The current rainfall patterns are being driven by the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), a weather system characterized by an eastward-moving pulse of clouds and rainfall across the tropics, which is currently strong and in a phase that enhances rainfall over many parts of Uganda. Additionally, a high-pressure system over Southern Africa is influencing weather conditions.
As a result, the ongoing rainfall is expected to continue and gradually spread to most parts of the country. During this period, moderate isolated rainfall is expected in the Elgon region and districts around the Lake Victoria Basin.
Towards the end of February 2026, enhanced rainfall is anticipated in the Kigezi region, parts of the Central and Eastern regions especially the Elgon areas, while the rest of the country is expected to experience a slight relaxation of the current conditions.
Farmers are therefore advised to use this update to prepare accordingly.
