The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has dismissed claims that it has already chosen or is supporting a Member of Parliament for the position of Speaker of Parliament, among those who have expressed interest in the seat.
UPC President Jimmy Akena, while addressing a press conference at Uganda House, said the party has not yet decided on whom to support for the position. However, he noted that Parliament needs a Speaker who understands the importance of Members of Parliament and the people they represent.
He also urged Members of Parliament to carefully examine those who have shown interest in contesting for the position, including their intentions and objectives.
Akena also condemned the continued violation of human rights in the country, saying there is a need for dialogue to find lasting solutions to Uganda’s challenges.
He further expressed concern over the blocking of a planned prayer service at Lubaga Cathedral that was intended to pray for detainees, including Kizza Besigye.
