Ugandans have been urged to adopt environmentally friendly practices to help protect nature from destruction and reduce diseases caused by environmental degradation and climate change, which continue to greatly affect farmers.

Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, made the remarks during the launch of an environmental conservation campaign aimed at encouraging boda boda riders to transition from fuel-powered motorcycles to electric ones.

The event was held at the Lugogo Industrial Area and the campaign, dubbed “Zuukuka,” is being led by the Boda Boda Union Uganda.

Minister Kyofatogabye said that if Kampala residents embrace electric motorcycles, the city’s environment will significantly improve due to reduced air pollution and noise caused by fuel-powered motorcycles. He also called upon companies such as Spiro, which manufacture electric motorcycles, to expand their focus to include electric taxis, noting that conventional taxis also contribute heavily to environmental pollution.

Meanwhile, the legal advisor of the Boda Boda Union Uganda, Fred Senoga, called on Ugandans to work together to protect the environment. He noted that many Ugandans suffer from diseases linked to pollution, forcing the government to spend over Shs140 billion on treatment of such illnesses caused by vehicle emissions.

In the same spirit, the National Chairperson of the Boda Boda Union Uganda, Frank Mawejje, urged boda boda riders across the country to embrace electric motorcycles, saying they are cost-effective and play an important role in conserving the environment by reducing harmful emissions.
