Uganda has the second highest number of certified organic agricultural producers in the world

National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda (NOGAMU) in collaboration with other partners has unveiled updated organic report for year 2018-2021

While meeting journalists at a press conference in Kampala this morning 2nd December 2022 , The chief Executive Officer  of NOGAMU Mr. Chariton Namuwoza said ‘’we unveil Uganda’s organic statistics report to be used in strengthening Uganda’s organic trade’’

According to Currently statistic from NOGAMU, the global organic market exceeds Euro 100 Billion (FiBl 2019). This rapid development has been partially attributed to a shift in consumer demand and the local market for organic products is also growing steadily according to a recent survey commissioned by NOGAMU organic statistics (2018-2021), which was conducted by Makerere University and the Centre for Ecosystems Research for Development (CERD).

The statistics indicate that Uganda stands on second position as highest number of certified organic producers in the world, after India. The most traded items include beverages (Coffee, Cocoa), Sesame, Chia seed, frozen fruit pulp, Fresh/dried fruits (pineapple, apple banana, mango, papaya, jack fruit, passion fruit), spices (Vanilla, chilli, ginger, cardamom, black pepper), herbs, essential oils, and Shea butter/nuts.

Ministry of Agriculture says with approval of the National Organic Agriculture Policy (NOAP) in 2019 producers are protected and this policy helps them strengthen research and technology development although Plans are under way to formulate the national organic agricultural bill and develop a popular version that will be translated into different languages for stakeholders to quickly grasp the contents of the policy.

Meanwhile NOGAMU a few day launched the Organic agriculture week  where and several activities are happening which includes today’s media briefing, 6th December 2022  there Field visits to selected organic practitioners –organic input manufacturers, farmers and/or processors;  7th December 2022 – Dialogue on strengthening Uganda’s competitiveness in organic trade through improved organic inputs, launching the NOGAMU 2023-2027 strategic plan , 2022 – Mini exhibition,and Organic Awards, recognizing organic agriculture practitioners
