Kampala Traders making loses over poor roads

The Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) leadership has threatened to mobilize traders to shun the payments of trading license and taxes to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) over poor road network in Kampala business Center.

The Chairman KACITA Thaddeus Musoke Nagenda while addressing journalists in Kampala on Tuesday said that they have information indicating over Sh700 billion lost annually due to poor road network.

Musoke says that poor roads affect businesses in Kampala by spoiling vehicles used in transporting goods and products yet they are expensive to maintain.

He attributes the poor road network to congestion and traffic jams which are also affecting the businesses yet traders pay huge taxes to the government through KCCA.

 Musoke has disclosed that KCCA received Sh26 billion for annual road maintenance but failed to utilize the funds to improve the road network in the capital city.

However, he has called for investigation into the Kampala Flyover project that has been delayed to completion and causing traffic jams which paralyzes businesses

Recently, Kampala city lord mayor Elias Lukwago said Kampala capital city has no budget for road safety yet such bought would rehabilitate some roads and other infrastructures. He said most of the roads are worked on by Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS)

Meawhile 60% Uganda’s GDP depends on Kampala.

Deputy  Speaker of Parliament  Thomas Tayebwa has called on Kampala  City Administration  to address the matter before the house so as to find the lasting solution .
