The Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has confirmed that elections for Local Council (LC) I and II will be conducted between March and early May 2026.
Magyezi made the remarks while addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, noting that the elections will take place before the swearing-in of the President.
“The President insisted that this time we must have the LC elections conducted between March and early May 2026, before the swearing-in of the President. I am here to inform the country and mobilize communities to start preparing for these elections,” Magyezi said.
He emphasized that LC I and LC II leaders play a critical role at the grassroots level, adding that complaints had been received about some chairpersons abandoning their offices or relocating from their villages and parishes.
“We are happy that we shall have new office bearers because communities have complained that we delayed in organizing these elections,” he added.
Recently, the Electoral Commission of Uganda, through its spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, announced that the election roadmap for LC polls will soon be released and urged the public to prepare.
Magyezi further explained that LC II chairpersons are instrumental in implementing government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), as well as maintaining order and environmental cleanliness in villages and parishes.
“I urge the general public to take part in the elections so that they can receive services from leaders of their choice,” he said.
