Government urged to fund women-led environmental conservation initiatives

24 July 2025, 7:50 pm

The government has been urged to allocate funds to women-led organisations that promote environmental conservation, to help educate Ugandans on how they can protect the environment.

This appeal was made by Sarah Kezia Nambalirwa from Women for Climate Change during a women’s environmental forum held at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in Nakawa.

Nambalirwa noted that many Ugandans mistakenly believe the government collects money from the public solely to serve the interests of the wealthy.

She said this perception is misguided and emphasised that her organisation is working hard to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the environment.

She called on the government to strengthen efforts to educate citizens about sustainable environmental practices.

Meanwhile, the Woman MP for Kiboga District and Shadow Minister for Water and Environment, Catherine Kaaya Nakimweero—who was representing the Minister of State for Water and Environment—emphasised that women must be included in all environmental protection initiatives. She stressed that women are effective contributors to such efforts and urged every woman, including young girls, to take part in activities that promote environmental sustainability.

The Commissioner for Climate Change at the Ministry of Water and Environment, Margaret Athieno Mwebesa, emphasised that every ministry’s budget should include funds specifically allocated for environmental protection.

The conference aims to foster inclusive dialogue and action among policymakers, development partners, civil society, and grassroots actors. It also seeks to align Uganda’s efforts with global climate frameworks and commitments.
