MTN Uganda, the National Information Technology Authority (NITA) Uganda, and the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have joined forces to enhance cybersecurity awareness in the country. This partnership comes as Uganda grapples with a rising threat of cyber attacks, with many incidents linked to human error, such as weak passwords and shared devices.
Carol Kagezi, Ministry Partnerships and Alliances Coordinator at the ICT Innovation Hub, revealed that the Ministry plans to launch a National AI Government Network and a multi-organisational framework to combat cyber threats. The initiative aims to promote responsible technology use and mitigate risks associated with cyber attacks.
Richard Yego, a cybersecurity expert, stressed the importance of training organisational staff on cybersecurity best practices, noting that hackers are advancing technologically and exploiting vulnerabilities.
“Hackers also advance in technology, so there is a need for institutional training,” he said.
Andrew Bugembe, Chief Finance Officer at MTN Uganda, highlighted the importance of investing in cybersecurity, citing a recent cyber attack on Land Rover in the UK that disrupted production for six weeks.
He added, “Cybersecurity is a way of life, and awareness is crucial in guiding decisions and preventing attacks. Once you’re aware, it informs your decisions. The importance of working with the Ministry cannot be overstated, as cyber threats pose a national risk.”
The partnership between MTN, NITA Uganda, and the Ministry of ICT underscores the growing recognition of cybersecurity as a critical national issue. By collaborating, the stakeholders aim to reduce the risk of cyber attacks and protect both individuals and organisations from potential threats.
“On 1st October, Uganda joined the rest of the world in observing Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Activities in the country are being coordinated by Milima Security, which has so far conducted awareness campaigns in West Nile and is now heading to Western Uganda to engage local communities,” said Emmanuel Chagara, CEO of Milima Security.
